The Hurricane Post

Postby Kethron » Tue Aug 25, 2020 6:53 am

Well, for the 3rd time in 15 years (for a "once every 5 years" rate), it looks like my home and area will be devastated by a major hurricane. Currently, we are dead center in the projected path of Tropical Storm (soon to be Hurricane) Laura, which is now expected to realistically reach Cat 3 status (I've even heard possibly Cat 4). I wish I could say I was used to this by now, but you don't ever really get used to this sort of thing.

In a way, I think it's worse. Because I know what to expect, I've got that much more anxiety about what's to come. It sucks.

One way or another, I'll find my way back as I've always done, but until then, take care, friends.

Please keep us posted sir. Hate to see your life disrupted like this, but I'll be praying for your safety.

News is a bit scary for this storm.

We barely missed a direct hit. In the last few hours before landfall, Laura tracked a little more north, so we ended up in the "wind side" of the storm. We had still hurricane force winds and gusts well in excess of 100 mph, but our Louisiana neighbor Lake Charles got the "dirty" side and the brunt of the damage (wind, rain, AND storm surge). That said, there's quite a bit of wind damage as well as downed trees and power lines, and as of my writing this, my hometown (Bridge City) is still without power. Power restoration is expected by the end of the week (or sooner), so for now, we're staying with my in-laws in Houston. We came away with just some shingles missing and a little damage to our fence - no big deal. Many weren't quite a fortunate, but in general, you could say we dodged a bullet.

Glad to hear that you're alright. Property can be fixed. People, not so much.

Basically 6 weeks later, we got hit with the Greek alphabet in Hurricane Delta. Not a great year for us with hurricanes. We've had worse, though. ;)

Yep - sorry. We're fine. Ida had no impact on Texas. Maybe we're going to be hurricane-free this year after taking two direct hits last year.
